Earth Day Materials

We want our customers to feel good about their water, so we strive to find ways to not only create more sustainable business practices, but to find solutions to the global water crisis. As a certified B-corporation, impact is a critical part of Soma's DNA. We infuse it into everything we do, from our product design and supply chain to our company culture and partnerships. This Earth Day, we’re highlighting Soma’s key materials and how they contribute to our ultimate goal of leaving the earth a better place than we found it.

Bamboo: the only woody plant that can keep up with human consumption, bamboo can grow up to 3 feet in 24 hours! It’s an extremely self-sufficient plant as it can regenerate from its own roots (it doesn’t need to be replanted), and it doesn’t require any fertilizer - its fallen leaves provide more than enough nutrients to keep it growing big and strong. Also, bamboo is technically a grass, not a tree, so all bamboo products are tree-free!

Glass: glass is endlessly recyclable, which means it can be recycled thousands of times without losing any of its properties. In addition to that, it takes much less energy to produce than materials like plastic, stainless steel, etc. Glass is also non-porous (it won’t hold on to odors, flavors, etc.), and non-toxic, so it won’t leach any weird chemicals or bacteria into your household items.

Ceramic: made from clay and various inorganic compounds, making it a 100% natural material. It requires much less energy to produce than many other materials, and when it’s returned to the environment it is completely benign.

Tritan: a BPA-free plastic — it is not manufactured with bisphenol A (BPA) or other bisphenol compounds, such as bisphenol S (BPS). It is impact resistant, shatterproof, and has exceptional dishwasher durability. It’s also much lighter than glass but offers a lot of the same benefits.
